Description

A classic Italian dessert featuring creamy vanilla gelato or ice cream ‘drowned’ with a shot of hot espresso and an optional splash of liqueur. This quick and indulgent treat combines the richness of coffee with the smooth sweetness of gelato, perfect for an elegant after-dinner dessert or a delightful afternoon pick-me-up.

Ingredients

Affogato Ingredients

  • 1 large scoop or 2 small scoops vanilla gelato or ice cream
  • 1 shot (30 ml / 1 oz) hot espresso coffee (short black)
  • 1 tbsp Frangelico, amaretto, or other liquor (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the glass: Select a suitable glass for serving affogato, such as a small clear glass or dessert cup, to showcase the melting ice cream and coffee swirls.
  2. Add the ice cream: Place one large scoop or two small scoops of vanilla gelato or ice cream into the glass.
  3. Prepare espresso and liquor: Brew a fresh shot of hot espresso. If using, measure out 1 tablespoon of your chosen liqueur like Frangelico or amaretto and have it ready on the side.
  4. Pour espresso and liquor: Pour the hot espresso shot over the ice cream in the glass, followed by the optional liqueur. The heat of the coffee will start melting the ice cream, creating delicious swirls.
  5. Serve immediately: Enjoy the affogato right away to savor the contrast between the cold ice cream and hot espresso before it fully melts.

Notes

  • Use high-quality vanilla gelato or ice cream for the best creamy texture and flavor.
  • Espresso should be freshly brewed and hot to ensure proper melting and flavor release.
  • The addition of liqueur is optional but adds a rich, nutty or almond-flavored depth to the dessert.
  • Serve immediately after assembly to enjoy the texture contrast between melting ice cream and hot coffee.
