Description

Apple Crumb Cake is a cozy, cinnamon-spiced dessert made with a tender apple-studded cake base and a thick, buttery crumb topping—perfect for brunch, dessert, or a comforting fall treat.

Ingredients

  • For the cake:
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup milk or buttermilk
  • 2 medium apples (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and diced
  • For the crumb topping:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line with parchment paper.
  2. Make the crumb topping: In a bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in melted butter until large crumbs form. Set aside.
  3. Make the cake batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each. Stir in vanilla.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients alternately with milk, mixing just until combined.
  6. Fold in diced apples gently.
  7. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan. Sprinkle crumb topping evenly over the batter.
  8. Bake for 45–55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool completely before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

  • Add chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumb topping for added crunch.
  • Use buttermilk for extra moistness and slight tang.
  • A dash of nutmeg or allspice enhances fall flavor.
  • Store tightly covered at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for longer freshness.
  • Delicious served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
