Ingredients
Donuts
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup dark cocoa powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Glaze
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp milk
- 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
Chocolate Crumb Topping
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
Instructions
- Prepare Donut Pan and Oven: Grease a donut pan thoroughly and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure even baking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, dark cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt to combine all dry elements uniformly.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, mix the sour cream, sugar, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and well blended.
- Make Donut Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. The batter will be thick, which is perfect for donuts.
- Fill Donut Pan: Spoon the batter evenly into the greased donut pan cavities, filling each about three-quarters full.
- Bake Donuts: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean and they are cooked through.
- Cool Donuts: Remove the baked donuts from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before glazing and topping.
- Make Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
- Prepare Crumb Topping: Melt the butter over low heat in a saucepan. Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt, then toss with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly and well combined.
- Apply Glaze and Topping: Pour or brush the glaze onto each cooled donut while it is still wet, then immediately press the chocolate crumb topping onto the glaze so it sticks well.
Notes
- Ensure the donuts are completely cooled before glazing to prevent melting the glaze.
- You can substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt for a slightly different texture and tang.
- Use a mix of unsweetened and dark cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.
- Donuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days for best freshness.
- If you don’t have a donut pan, you can use a muffin pan and create a donut shape manually after baking.
