Description

These Baked Chocolate Crumb Donuts are a delightful treat combining rich cocoa flavors with a tender crumb topping and a smooth vanilla glaze. Perfectly baked, moist, and deliciously chocolaty, these donuts offer a homemade touch to your breakfast or dessert table.

Ingredients

Donuts

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup dark cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Glaze

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract

Chocolate Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Donut Pan and Oven: Grease a donut pan thoroughly and preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure even baking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, dark cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt to combine all dry elements uniformly.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate small bowl, mix the sour cream, sugar, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth and well blended.
  4. Make Donut Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined. The batter will be thick, which is perfect for donuts.
  5. Fill Donut Pan: Spoon the batter evenly into the greased donut pan cavities, filling each about three-quarters full.
  6. Bake Donuts: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 12 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into a donut comes out clean and they are cooked through.
  7. Cool Donuts: Remove the baked donuts from the oven and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack before glazing and topping.
  8. Make Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  9. Prepare Crumb Topping: Melt the butter over low heat in a saucepan. Add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, and salt, then toss with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly and well combined.
  10. Apply Glaze and Topping: Pour or brush the glaze onto each cooled donut while it is still wet, then immediately press the chocolate crumb topping onto the glaze so it sticks well.

Notes

  • Ensure the donuts are completely cooled before glazing to prevent melting the glaze.
  • You can substitute sour cream with Greek yogurt for a slightly different texture and tang.
  • Use a mix of unsweetened and dark cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor.
  • Donuts can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days for best freshness.
  • If you don’t have a donut pan, you can use a muffin pan and create a donut shape manually after baking.
