Description

Biscuits and Gravy Breakfast Casserole combines fluffy biscuits, savory sausage, creamy gravy, and melted cheese into one hearty, comforting breakfast dish.

Ingredients

1 lb breakfast sausage

1 can (16 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 cups milk

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp onion powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp black pepper

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage and set aside, leaving some of the drippings in the pan.
  3. In the same skillet, whisk the flour into the drippings and cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden color.
  4. Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  5. Season the gravy with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and thyme (if using).
  6. Cut the biscuit dough into quarters and arrange the pieces evenly in the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  7. Spoon the cooked sausage evenly over the biscuits, then pour the gravy mixture over the top. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  1. Add sautéed bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms for extra flavor and texture.
  2. Swap sausage for turkey sausage or vegetarian sausage for a lighter or meat-free option.
  3. Try using different cheeses such as mozzarella, pepper jack, or a combination for variety.
  4. Make it spicy by adding diced jalapeños or using spicy sausage.
