A hearty and comforting dish perfect for breakfast or brunch, Biscuits and Gravy Hashbrown Casserole combines the rich flavors of creamy sausage gravy with crispy hashbrowns and tender biscuit pieces. This casserole is loaded with savory ingredients that make every bite feel like a warm hug.
Ingredients
1 pound breakfast sausage
1 can refrigerated biscuits, cut into small pieces
1 bag (about 30 oz) frozen hashbrowns, thawed
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups milk
1/4 cup flour
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, cook the breakfast sausage over medium heat until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
- Once the sausage is cooked through, remove it from the skillet and set it aside.
- In the same skillet, add the flour and whisk it into the sausage drippings, cooking for 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
- Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper to the gravy. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
- In a large baking dish, layer the hashbrowns, sausage, and biscuit pieces.
- Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the top, then sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the casserole.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown and the biscuits are cooked through.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Vegetarian Version: Replace the sausage with a plant-based sausage or use sautéed vegetables like mushrooms and spinach for a meat-free option.
- Spicy Kick: Add a chopped jalapeño or a pinch of cayenne pepper to the gravy for a spicy twist.
- Cheese Options: Swap out the cheddar cheese for other cheeses like mozzarella or Monterey Jack for a different flavor profile.
- Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free biscuits and flour to make this dish gluten-free.
