Description
This Candy Apples recipe offers a classic and fun treat perfect for parties, celebrations, or a sweet snack. Crisp apples are coated in a shiny, cinnamon-flavored hard candy shell made from sugar, corn syrup, and water, then allowed to cool and harden. The recipe is simple to follow and yields beautifully glossy apples with a crunchy, flavorful, sweet coating.
Ingredients
For the Candy Apples
- 4 medium apples
- Popsicle sticks or bamboo apple sticks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
- 6 tablespoons water
- ¼ teaspoon red food coloring
- ¼ teaspoon cinnamon flavor
Instructions
- Insert sticks into apples: Push a popsicle stick or bamboo stick about halfway into the center through the top of each apple. Set the prepared apples aside for dipping later.
- Prepare baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with wax paper, parchment paper, or a nonstick baking mat. Generously coat the surface with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Combine sugar mixture: In a large saucepan, add the granulated sugar, light corn syrup, and water. Stir them together until the mixture is well combined.
- Boil the syrup: Place the saucepan over high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring regularly to ensure it does not burn.
- Adjust heat and add flavors: Once the mixture is boiling, reduce the heat to medium. Stir in the red food coloring and cinnamon flavoring, if using.
- Cook to hard crack stage: Continue boiling the syrup without stirring until it reaches the hard crack stage temperature of 300-310°F (149-154°C), approximately 15-20 minutes. Use a candy thermometer for accuracy.
- Remove from heat: Once the syrup reaches the desired temperature, remove the pan from heat immediately to prevent burning.
- Dip the apples: Quickly but carefully dip each apple into the hot sugar coating, turning to evenly coat all sides. Allow excess syrup to drip off before placing the apple on the prepared baking sheet.
- Cool and set: Place the coated apples on the prepared surface and allow them to cool completely until the candy shell hardens and sets, about 20-30 minutes.
Notes
- Use a candy thermometer to monitor syrup temperature accurately for perfect candy coating.
- Handle hot sugar syrup with care to avoid burns.
- Choose crisp, fresh apples such as Granny Smith or Fuji for best results.
- For variations, try different food colorings or flavor extracts to customize your candy apples.
- Store the coating apples in a cool, dry place to prevent the candy shell from becoming sticky.
