Description

These delightful Cherry Turnovers are made with flaky puff pastry filled with a sweet cherry filling, then baked to golden perfection and drizzled with a smooth vanilla glaze. Perfect for a snack or dessert, they combine the tartness of cherries with a light, buttery crust and a sweet finish.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 1 cup cherry pie filling
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/8 teaspoon almond extract (optional)

Pastry

  • 1 roll puff pastry dough, thawed (one roll per batch, typically 2 rolls per package)
  • 1 large egg (for egg wash)

Vanilla Glaze

  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 Tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons clear vanilla extract (to keep the icing white)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  2. Prepare Cherry Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup cherry pie filling, 2 Tablespoons brown sugar, 1/2 Tablespoon cornstarch, and 1/8 teaspoon almond extract. Stir well until the cornstarch is fully dissolved. Set this mixture aside to thicken slightly.
  3. Roll Out Puff Pastry: Roll out one thawed puff pastry dough sheet. If it’s rolled on parchment paper, unroll it and keep it on the paper for easy handling.
  4. Cut Dough Into Squares: Cut the rolled puff pastry dough into 4×4 inch squares using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
  5. Arrange Dough Squares: Place the cut dough squares spaced apart on the prepared baking sheet to allow room for puffing during baking.
  6. Add Filling: Spoon approximately 1 Tablespoon of the prepared cherry filling into the center of each puff pastry square.
  7. Shape Turnovers: Fold each square diagonally over the filling to create a triangle. Seal the edges firmly by pressing them with a fork to crimp and prevent filling leakage.
  8. Apply Egg Wash: Beat the large egg vigorously in a small bowl. Brush this egg wash evenly over the tops of the turnovers to promote browning and shine.
  9. Bake Turnovers: Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, until the turnovers are puffed up and have a nice golden brown color.
  10. Cool Turnovers: Remove from the oven and let the turnovers cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Prepare Vanilla Glaze: While the turnovers cool, whisk together powdered sugar, milk (start with 1 Tablespoon), and clear vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth. Adjust thickness by adding more milk or powdered sugar as needed.
  12. Glaze the Turnovers: Once cooled, drizzle the vanilla glaze over the turnovers using a spoon, allowing the glaze to coat them evenly.
  13. Set and Serve: Let the glaze set for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy these delicious cherry turnovers fresh for the best taste and texture.

Notes

  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed before rolling to avoid tearing.
  • Seal the edges tightly with a fork to prevent cherry filling from leaking out during baking.
  • Use clear vanilla extract in the glaze to keep the icing white and visually appealing.
  • You can adjust the glaze consistency by adding more milk if it’s too thick or more powdered sugar if too thin.
  • Store leftover turnovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days; they are best enjoyed fresh.
