Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- 1 cup buttermilk
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Glaze
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2-3 tablespoons buttermilk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two standard-sized donut pans (which makes 12 donuts total) to prevent sticking and set aside.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until evenly combined.
- Add Wet Ingredients: To the dry mixture, add the egg, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk thoroughly until the batter is smooth and combined, keeping in mind the batter will be somewhat thick.
- Fill Donut Pans: Spoon the batter into the prepared donut pans, filling each mold about three-quarters full to allow for rising during baking.
- Bake the Donuts: Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes. The donuts are ready when they spring back lightly to the touch.
- Cool Slightly: Let the donuts cool in the pans for about 5 minutes to firm up before removing them to avoid breaking.
- Remove and Cool Completely: Carefully remove the donuts from the pans and transfer them to a wire cooling rack. Allow them to cool to near room temperature before glazing.
- Prepare the Glaze: In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons of buttermilk, and vanilla extract until smooth. Adjust the consistency with additional buttermilk, if necessary, to make a thick glaze that will adhere well to the donuts.
- Glaze the Donuts: Dip each cooled donut into the chocolate glaze, allowing excess glaze to drip off. Place the glazed donuts back on the wire rack and let the glaze set before serving.
Notes
- Ensure not to overfill the donut pans to prevent batter overflow during baking.
- Donuts should be handled gently when removing from pans to maintain their shape.
- The glaze consistency can be adjusted with buttermilk to achieve a thicker or thinner coating.
- For best texture, serve donuts the same day, though they can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- These baked donuts provide a lighter alternative to traditional fried ones without compromising on flavor.
