Description

This Easter Cake Buttercream recipe creates a rich, creamy frosting perfect for decorating layered cakes. Using unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and heavy cream, this buttercream is light, fluffy, and easy to customize with gel food coloring and festive Cadbury mini eggs for a seasonal touch. Ideal for enhancing any 3 8” cake rounds, whether homemade or box mix.

Ingredients

Buttercream Frosting

  • 4 sticks (2 cups) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 7 cups (2 lbs) powdered sugar
  • 2 to 4 tbsp heavy cream or milk
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • Green gel food coloring
  • Brown gel food coloring

Cake

  • 3 8” cake rounds (box mix or homemade)
  • Cadbury mini eggs (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Beat Butter and Sugar: In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment or a large bowl using a hand mixer, combine the unsalted butter and powdered sugar on low speed. Mix until fully incorporated. Then increase speed to medium and beat for 4-5 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy.
  2. Add Liquids and Flavor: Add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk, the vanilla extract, and kosher salt to the butter-sugar mixture. Beat until just combined. Adjust consistency by adding more heavy cream or milk if too thick, or additional powdered sugar if too thin. Use a rubber spatula to smooth the frosting and remove air bubbles for optimal decoration surfaces.
  3. Color and Decorate: Divide the buttercream and tint portions with green and brown gel food coloring as desired. Use this colored buttercream to frost your layered cake rounds. Decorate the finished cake with Cadbury mini eggs for a festive Easter presentation.
  4. Finalize Cake Decoration: Follow any additional cake decorating techniques or tutorials referenced to complete your cake’s look.

Notes

  • Ensure butter is at room temperature to achieve a smooth, fluffy texture.
  • Adjust the heavy cream or milk amount to get the perfect buttercream consistency for spreading or piping.
  • Gel food colorings add vibrant color without thinning the frosting.
  • Cadbury mini eggs provide a fun and festive Easter-themed decoration.
  • You can prepare the buttercream frosting ahead and store it in the refrigerator; let it soften before using.
