Description

This Eggnog French Toast recipe brings a festive twist to the classic breakfast favorite by infusing rich, creamy eggnog and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg into the batter. Perfectly golden and fluffy slices of bread are pan-fried to a crisp, then finished with your choice of toppings like maple syrup, fresh fruit, or Greek yogurt for a delicious and comforting meal that’s ideal for holiday mornings or weekend brunches.

Ingredients

Eggnog Mixture

  • 2 cups (500ml) eggnog
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 tsp (3g) ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp (3g) ground nutmeg

Bread

  • 1 loaf bloomer bread, sliced 1-1½ inch thick

For Cooking

  • 2 tbsp (40g) butter

Instructions

  1. Prepare the eggnog mixture: In a large bowl, combine the eggnog, eggs, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Whisk everything together thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and the spices are evenly distributed.
  2. Slice the bread: Cut the bloomer bread into slices about 1 to 1½ inches thick, ensuring each piece is sturdy enough to soak up the eggnog mixture without falling apart.
  3. Heat the pan: Place a frying pan over medium heat and add a knob of butter. Allow it to melt completely and coat the pan to prevent sticking.
  4. Soak the bread: Dip each slice of bread into the eggnog mixture, allowing it to soak for around 5 seconds on one side before flipping to soak the other side for the same duration. Ensure the bread absorbs enough liquid but doesn’t become overly soggy.
  5. Cook the French toast: Transfer the soaked bread slices to the hot frying pan. Cook each side for approximately 3-5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
  6. Serve: Remove the French toast from the pan and serve immediately. Top with your favorite toppings such as icing sugar, fresh fruit, maple syrup, Greek yogurt, and berries for a delightful breakfast treat. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use stale or day-old bread for better absorption without falling apart.
  • Adjust the soaking time depending on the bread type and thickness.
  • Keep the cooked French toast warm in a low oven if making in batches.
  • Feel free to substitute spices or add vanilla extract for extra flavor.
  • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free eggnog or milk alternatives.
