  • Yield: Approximately 250 ml sweetened condensed milk

Description

This homemade sweetened condensed milk recipe is a simple and delicious way to create rich, creamy condensed milk from just whole milk and caster sugar. Perfect for baking, desserts, or coffee, this recipe simmers the mixture gently until it thickens and reduces by half, yielding a smooth, sweet condensed milk free from additives.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 500 ml Whole Milk (Full-Fat)
  • 170 g Caster Sugar

Instructions

  1. Prepare the milk and sugar: Pour whole, full-fat milk into a large saucepan and add the caster sugar.
  2. Heat the mixture: Place the saucepan on the stove over low heat.
  3. Dissolve the sugar: Stir the mixture continuously with a wooden spoon until the sugar completely dissolves.
  4. Simmer gently: Let the sweetened milk simmer over low heat, stirring gently and occasionally, for about 30-40 minutes.
  5. Skim impurities: Occasionally remove any scum that forms on the sides of the pan with a spoon to ensure a smooth texture.
  6. Reduce and thicken: Continue simmering until the milk volume is reduced by about half and it turns a slightly creamy color.
  7. Transfer and cool: Pour the thickened condensed milk into a sterilised jar and allow it to cool completely; it will thicken further as it cools.
  8. Seal and store: Once cooled, place an airtight lid on the jar and store the condensed milk in the refrigerator where it will keep for about one month.

Notes

  • Use low heat to prevent burning or curdling of the milk.
  • Stir occasionally but gently to avoid forming a skin on the surface.
  • Ensure the jar is properly sterilized to extend the shelf life.
  • This recipe makes approximately 250 ml of condensed milk after reduction.
  • The condensed milk will thicken more as it cools; consistency should be creamy and smooth.
  • If a thicker consistency is desired, simmer for a few extra minutes but watch carefully to avoid burning.
