Description

Salisbury Steak Meatballs are a hearty, comforting twist on the classic dish, featuring tender beef meatballs simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. Perfect over mashed potatoes, noodles, or rice for a satisfying meal.

Ingredients

  • For the meatballs:
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the gravy:
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (or flour)
  • 2 tbsp water (for slurry)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire, Dijon, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until just combined.
  2. Form into 1-inch meatballs and place on a plate or baking sheet.
  3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown meatballs on all sides (they don’t need to be cooked through). Remove and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add onions and mushrooms and sauté until soft and golden, about 6–8 minutes.
  5. Stir in Worcestershire, Dijon mustard, and beef broth. Bring to a simmer.
  6. Mix cornstarch with water to make a slurry. Stir into the gravy and simmer until slightly thickened.
  7. Return meatballs to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low for 15–20 minutes until meatballs are fully cooked.
  8. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Notes

  • Use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version.
  • Bake meatballs at 400°F for 15–18 minutes as an alternative to pan-frying.
  • Add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy for extra richness.
  • Make it gluten-free by using GF breadcrumbs and cornstarch.
