Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1/2 cup powdered sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/4 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter (for caramel layer)
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon sea salt (for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of softened butter, powdered sugar, flour, and salt. Mix until the dough forms.
- Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
- Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
- For the caramel filling, melt 1/2 cup butter and brown sugar together in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
- Once melted, add heavy cream and vanilla extract, continuing to stir until smooth and combined.
- Bring the caramel to a simmer, stirring constantly, and cook for 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Pour the caramel mixture over the baked crust and spread evenly.
- Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbling and slightly golden around the edges.
- Remove from the oven and let the bars cool completely before cutting into squares.
- Once cooled, sprinkle sea salt on top of each bar for the perfect sweet and salty finish.
Notes
- For a chocolatey twist, drizzle melted chocolate over the caramel before adding the sea salt.
- To make these bars gluten-free, use a gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour.
- Feel free to use smoked sea salt or fleur de sel for a unique flavor variation.
