Description

Salted Caramel Butter Bars are a delightful treat combining a buttery shortbread base, a rich salted caramel filling, and a sprinkle of sea salt for a perfect sweet and salty flavor.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 1/4 cups brown sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter (for caramel layer)

1/4 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of softened butter, powdered sugar, flour, and salt. Mix until the dough forms.
  3. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven and set aside to cool.
  5. For the caramel filling, melt 1/2 cup butter and brown sugar together in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  6. Once melted, add heavy cream and vanilla extract, continuing to stir until smooth and combined.
  7. Bring the caramel to a simmer, stirring constantly, and cook for 3-5 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  8. Pour the caramel mixture over the baked crust and spread evenly.
  9. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the caramel is bubbling and slightly golden around the edges.
  10. Remove from the oven and let the bars cool completely before cutting into squares.
  11. Once cooled, sprinkle sea salt on top of each bar for the perfect sweet and salty finish.

Notes

  1. For a chocolatey twist, drizzle melted chocolate over the caramel before adding the sea salt.
  2. To make these bars gluten-free, use a gluten-free flour blend in place of the all-purpose flour.
  3. Feel free to use smoked sea salt or fleur de sel for a unique flavor variation.
  4. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
  5. If freezing, keep in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
