Description

This Sourdough French Toast recipe transforms day-old sourdough bread into a golden, custardy breakfast treat. The batter, made from half-and-half, eggs, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt, infuses the bread with rich flavor and a perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Cooked on a griddle or skillet until lightly golden, this easy-to-make French toast is perfect for a comforting morning meal.

Ingredients

Batter

  • 1 cup half-and-half (or whole milk or heavy cream)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 3 Tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

For Cooking

  • 1-2 Tablespoons butter
  • 6-8 slices sourdough bread, day-old, cut 3/4″ thick

Instructions

  1. Slice the bread: Slice the day-old sourdough bread into 3/4-inch thick slices. Set aside.
  2. Blend the egg mixture: In a blender, combine 1 cup half-and-half, 4 eggs, 3 tablespoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Pulse until smooth. Alternatively, whisk all ingredients together in a bowl until well combined.
  3. Prepare the griddle: Preheat a griddle to 350°F or heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 1-2 tablespoons of butter on the pan.
  4. Dip and cook: Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, flipping it to evenly coat both sides. Place the coated bread on the preheated griddle or skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes per side, or until lightly golden brown. Whisk the egg mixture as needed between batches.
  5. Serve: Serve the French toast immediately topped with your favorite toppings. Alternatively, keep the cooked French toast warm on a baking sheet in the oven at 175°F until ready to serve.

Notes

  • Day-old sourdough bread is ideal as it soaks up the batter without becoming too soggy.
  • You can substitute half-and-half with whole milk or heavy cream based on your preference.
  • Use butter for cooking to achieve a rich, golden crust.
  • Keep cooked French toast warm in a low oven if preparing in batches.
  • Popular toppings include maple syrup, fresh berries, powdered sugar, or whipped cream.
