Description
Spiced Upside-Down Apple Pie is a stunning twist on the classic dessert, featuring caramelized apples baked beneath a flaky crust and flipped for a beautiful, glossy topping. Warm spices and buttery richness make every bite comforting and delicious.
Ingredients
- 5–6 firm apples (e.g., Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tsp ground cloves
- 1/4 tsp ground ginger
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (for dusting)
- 1 pie crust (store-bought or homemade)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch pie dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar until smooth and bubbling. Pour this caramel into the bottom of the prepared pie dish.
- Arrange apple slices over the caramel in a circular pattern. Sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and lemon juice.
- Roll out the pie crust on a floured surface and place it over the apples, tucking the edges into the dish. Cut small slits in the crust to allow steam to escape.
- Brush the crust with beaten egg.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes or until the crust is golden and crisp.
- Let the pie rest for 5–10 minutes. Carefully place a plate over the pie and invert to flip it upside-down. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use firm apples like Honeycrisp or Granny Smith to hold shape while baking.
- Grease the pie dish well to prevent sticking when flipping.
- Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for extra indulgence.
- Caramel sticking? Just scoop it out and spread it on top after flipping.
