Description

West Virginia Hot Dog Chili Sauce is a savory, hearty topping made with ground beef, a blend of spices, and a unique tomato base. It adds a smoky, tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with hot dogs, transforming them into something truly special.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce

1/2 cup water

2 tablespoons white vinegar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 tablespoons yellow mustard

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the tomato sauce, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard.
  4. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. Stir until well combined.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  6. Once the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency, remove it from the heat.
  7. Serve the chili sauce generously over hot dogs and enjoy!

Notes

  1. Leftover chili sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  2. Reheat the sauce by warming it in a saucepan over low heat, adding a bit of water if it’s too thick.
  3. This chili sauce can be made ahead and tastes even better after the flavors meld together.
  4. The sauce freezes well for up to 3 months. Just allow it to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container or freezer bag.
