Perfectly baked until golden and bubbly, this crumble offers a warm, fruity treat ideal for family gatherings or cozy nights in.
Ingredients
Fruit Filling
- 8 medium apples (Gala, Fuji, or Honeycrisp recommended – cored, thinly sliced, and cut)
- 1 large lemon (zest and juice)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 cups blackberries (fresh or frozen, rinsed)
Crumble Topping
- 1 cup almond flour
- 1/2 cup quick oats
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 3/4 cup butter (salted, melted)
Instructions
- Prep & Make The Fruit Filling: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) and butter or grease your choice of baking dish—either eight individual ramekins, a 2-quart baking dish, or a 9 x 13 baking pan. Ensure the fruit filling will spread to about 1 1/2 inches deep to bake evenly.
- Combine Fruit Ingredients: In a large bowl, toss the thinly sliced and cut apples with the lemon juice to prevent discoloration and enhance flavor. Add the lemon zest and sugar, stirring to coat the apples thoroughly. Gently fold in the blackberries to keep them intact without crushing.
- Portion the Filling: Transfer the prepared fruit mixture evenly into the greased baking dish or ramekins, spreading it out to form an even layer.
- Make the Crumble Topping: In a medium bowl, mix together the almond flour, quick oats, and light brown sugar. Pour in the melted butter and use a fork to combine all ingredients, breaking up any clumps to achieve a crumbly texture.
- Assemble and Bake: Evenly spread the crumble topping over the fruit filling using a fork. Place the assembled dish on the middle rack of the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit filling is bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool for 10 to 15 minutes to allow the filling to set slightly. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.
Notes
- Use fresh or frozen blackberries, but if using frozen berries, thaw and drain excess liquid before mixing.
- The crumble topping can be made in advance and refrigerated until ready to bake.
- For a nuttier flavor, you can toast the almond flour lightly before mixing it with other crumble ingredients.
- This dish is best served warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
