Ingredients
Filling and Spice Mix
- 20 oz apple pie filling
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ cup light brown sugar, packed
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 Tbsp salted butter, melted
Biscuit Dough
- 3 cans Pillsbury Grands Biscuits (8 count cans, 7.5 ounces each)
Vanilla Icing
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 2-3 Tbsp heavy cream (or half & half, or milk)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Liberally grease and flour a bundt or tube pan, or use non-stick baking spray to ensure easy removal of the bread after baking.
- Prepare Apple Mixture: Empty the apple pie filling into a large mixing bowl. Use a knife to cut the apple slices into smaller chunks to distribute evenly throughout the bread.
- Add Sugars and Spices: Add granulated sugar, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter to the apple chunks. Stir well to combine all flavors evenly.
- Cut Biscuits: Quarter each biscuit can and then cut each biscuit into quarters or smaller pieces. Add these biscuit pieces to the mixing bowl with the apple mixture.
- Toss to Coat: Fold the biscuit pieces gently into the apple mixture until all pieces are well coated with the sugary, spiced filling.
- Transfer and Bake: Pour the biscuit and apple mixture into the prepared pan, evenly spreading it out. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes. To ensure it’s done, the top should be fluffy and golden, and an inserted toothpick or cake tester should come out clean. The internal temperature should reach 190°F (88°C).
- Cool and Remove: Once baked, remove the pan from the oven and immediately invert it onto a plate or serving tray to release the monkey bread.
- Make Vanilla Icing: In a small bowl, combine confectioners’ sugar, heavy cream (start with 2 tablespoons and add more if needed), and vanilla extract. Stir until smooth and the glaze reaches a pourable but slightly thick consistency.
- Drizzle and Serve: Using a spoon, drizzle the vanilla icing generously over the warm monkey bread. Serve immediately to enjoy the gooey, sweet, and tender goodness.
Notes
- Use a bundt or tube pan to get the iconic monkey bread shape and ease of removal.
- Make sure to grease and flour the pan well for smooth unmolding.
- Adjust the amount of heavy cream in the icing to achieve your preferred drizzle thickness.
- For a lighter option, you can substitute milk for heavy cream in the icing, though it will be less rich.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and warmed before serving but are best enjoyed fresh.
- Check with a thermometer to ensure the bread is fully baked internally.
