Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ¼ teaspoon baking soda
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Wet Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, at room temperature
- ½ cup whole milk, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup blueberries
Glaze Ingredients
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: 1-2 teaspoons blueberry jam
Instructions
- Prepare the doughnut pan: Grease 8-10 cavities of a doughnut pan using vegetable shortening or a pan release spray to prevent sticking.
- Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, stir together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and ground nutmeg until well combined.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted unsalted butter, egg, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually whisk the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until the batter is lump-free and smooth. Then gently fold in the fresh blueberries to distribute them evenly.
- Fill the pan: Spoon the batter into the prepared doughnut pan cavities, filling each about three-quarters full to allow room for rising during baking.
- Bake the donuts: Place the pan in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for 9-11 minutes. The donuts are done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool the donuts: Allow the pan to cool until it is safe to handle, then carefully turn the donuts out onto a cooling rack to cool completely before glazing.
- Prepare the glaze: In a small pot over low to medium heat, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract. Stir occasionally and cook until a slight crust begins to form on the surface.
- Glaze the donuts: Remove the glaze from heat and dip the cooled donuts into it. If blueberries have settled on one side and prevent the glaze from sticking, dip the opposite side as well.
- Maintain glaze consistency: Stir the glaze occasionally during dipping to prevent crust formation between dips.
- Optional jam addition: For enhanced blueberry flavor, stir 1-2 teaspoons of blueberry jam into the glaze and drizzle over the donuts.
Notes
- Ensure the blueberries are fresh and dry to avoid excess moisture in the batter.
- Filling the doughnut cavities about ¾ full helps achieve the perfect donut height without overflow.
- The glaze can be warmed slightly if it thickens too much before dipping.
- Use room temperature ingredients for best batter consistency and donut texture.
- These donuts are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
