Description
Funnel Cake Fries are a fun and crispy treat made from a sweet, vanilla-flavored batter fried to golden perfection. These curly, crunchy fries are dusted with powdered sugar and perfect for serving warm as a delightful dessert or snack for gatherings.
Ingredients
Batter Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup milk (plus 1–2 tablespoons, if needed)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
For Frying
- Vegetable or canola oil (for frying)
For Serving
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Instructions
- Mix Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, granulated sugar, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring continuously until the batter is smooth and pourable. Add an additional 1–2 tablespoons of milk if the batter is too thick to achieve the right consistency.
- Prepare for Piping: Transfer the batter into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip or a squeeze bottle to allow for precise control while frying.
- Heat Oil: Pour vegetable or canola oil to a depth of about 3 inches in a deep pan or Dutch oven. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 340°F–350°F (170°C–175°C). Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature closely and adjust the heat as needed to maintain the correct frying temperature.
- Fry the Fries: Pipe 3–4 strips of batter, each about 5–6 inches long, directly into the hot oil. Fry these strips for 2–3 minutes on one side until golden brown, then carefully flip and fry the other side for an additional 2–3 minutes.
- Drain Excess Oil: Using a slotted spoon or tongs, transfer the cooked funnel cake fries to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up excess oil. Repeat this process with the remaining batter, making sure the oil temperature remains consistent.
- Dust with Powdered Sugar: Once all fries are cooked and drained, generously dust them with powdered sugar while they are still warm to enhance their sweetness and add a classic touch.
- Serve Warm: Serve the funnel cake fries immediately while still warm and crispy for the best texture and flavor experience.
Notes
- Monitor oil temperature carefully to avoid greasy or burnt funnel cake fries.
- Use a thermometer for accuracy in oil heating.
- If batter thickens too much while standing, stir in a little milk to loosen it before piping.
- Serve immediately for optimal crispiness; leftovers may lose texture.
