Description

This classic Granny Smith Apple Pie recipe features tart and crisp apples tossed with warm spices, baked to perfection in a buttery double-crust pie. The perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors, this pie boasts a flaky golden crust and bubbling spiced apple filling, ideal for holiday gatherings or comforting dessert anytime.

Ingredients

Apple Filling

  • 6 cups Granny Smith apples (cored, peeled, and sliced – approximately 8 medium or 6 large apples)
  • 1 Tbsp lemon juice
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (up to ¾ cup, adjusted to taste)
  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp apple pie spice (or your favorite brand)
  • ⅛ tsp salt
  • 2 Tbsp butter (melted and cooled)

Pie Crust

  • 2 unbaked butter pie crusts (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Peel, core, and slice the Granny Smith apples. Place them in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and roll out one pie crust. Fit it into a 9-inch pie pan, ensuring it’s evenly laid out.
  3. Add Lemon Juice: Squeeze lemon juice over the sliced apples and gently toss to coat. This prevents browning and adds a bright flavor.
  4. Mix Filling: Add light brown sugar, all-purpose flour, apple pie spice, salt, and melted butter to the apples. Toss gently until all ingredients are evenly combined and the apples are coated.
  5. Fill Pie: Pour the prepared apple mixture over the pie crust in the pan, spreading it out evenly.
  6. Top Crust: Roll out the second pie crust and carefully place it over the filling. Press the edges of the top and bottom crusts together to crimp them, sealing the pie.
  7. Vent and Optional Sugar: Cut slits into the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking. Optionally, sprinkle with additional sugar or a cinnamon-sugar blend for extra sweetness and texture.
  8. Bake: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  9. Cool: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool thoroughly before slicing to let the filling set.

Notes

  • Use tart Granny Smith apples for the best balance of sweetness and acidity.
  • You can adjust the amount of sugar according to your taste or the tartness of your apples.
  • For a flakier crust, chill your pie crust dough before rolling out.
  • Allow the pie to cool completely; warm pie may be too runny to slice cleanly.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
