Description

A vibrant and delightful Kool Aid Cake recipe that uses white cake mix and Kool-Aid powder to create colorful layers and frosting with a unique ombre effect. Perfect for parties or special occasions, this cake combines classic baking with fun, tangy flavors and eye-catching presentation.

Ingredients

Cake Ingredients

  • 1 box of white cake mix
  • 1 1/4 cup water
  • 1/3 cup olive or vegetable oil
  • 3 egg whites

Frosting Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • Kool-Aid drink powder or liquid concentrate (for coloring and flavoring)
  • Food coloring (as needed for brighter colors)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cake Pans: Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Coat three 6-inch cake pans with oil and line the bottom of each with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Cake Batter: In a medium bowl, combine the white cake mix with water, oil, and egg whites. Mix until smooth. Divide the batter evenly into three separate bowls.
  3. Color the Batter: Add Kool-Aid powder or liquid concentrate to each bowl to create three distinct colors. For darker or muted shades, add additional food coloring as needed.
  4. Bake: Pour each colored batter into the prepared cake pans. Bake for approximately 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool the Cakes: Remove cakes from oven and place on cooling racks. Allow them to cool completely before frosting to ensure a smooth finish.
  6. Make Frosting: In a mixing bowl, whip together the unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and heavy cream until smooth and creamy.
  7. Assemble Layers: Place the darkest cake layer at the bottom on a cake stand. Spread a generous amount of buttercream frosting over the top. Repeat this process with the middle and lightest colored cakes, frosting between each layer.
  8. Crumb Coat: Apply a thin layer of frosting over the entire cake to seal in crumbs, focusing on covering the top generously and just a light coat on the sides.
  9. Divide and Color Frosting: Separate the remaining frosting evenly into three bowls. Add Kool-Aid powder or concentrate to create three distinct frosting colors, adding food coloring as needed for brightness.
  10. Pipe Frosting Rings: Using a piping bag with a large round tip or a Ziploc bag with the corner clipped, pipe rings of the darkest colored frosting around the bottom third of the cake sides.
  11. Continue Piping: Pipe the medium colored frosting rings above the darkest layer, followed by the lightest color near the top of the cake, creating layered rings that don’t have to be perfectly even.
  12. Create Ombre Effect: Hold an offset spatula perpendicular to the table and smooth the frosting rings together around the cake, blending the colors for a beautiful ombre finish. Wipe excess frosting off the spatula between smoothings.
  13. Final Touches: Continue to smooth until the desired color transition is achieved. The sides can have a light crumb coat look instead of full coverage.
  14. Optional Cupcake Variation: This recipe yields enough batter for about 24 cupcakes. For cupcakes, layer stripes of differently colored frosting into a large piping bag and pipe onto each cupcake to create an ombre striped effect as desired.

Notes

  • Make sure cakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting or sliding.
  • The addition of food coloring helps brighten some Kool-Aid colors, especially grape.
  • Use unsalted butter for frosting to control saltiness.
  • For a more vibrant cake, add Kool-Aid powder gradually and taste the batter if desired.
  • This cake is best served within 2 days of preparation and stores well in the refrigerator.
